One of the questions often asked in early discussions about implementing a Values Based Safety® (VBS) process is, “How many observation checklists are required for an effective process?” Sometimes the question is worded a bit differently, “Can we have an effective behavioral safety process using a single checklist?”
Quality Safety Edge and the Minnesota Safety Council
In reaction to a number of traffic injuries and deaths in Minnesota, that state’s Governor Theodore Christianson convened the Minnesota Conference on Street and Highway Safety. The year was 1926. Two years later the Minnesota Safety Council was formed to address its citizens’ safety on the road, at work, and at home. Today, 85 years later, the Minnesota Safety Council continues to meet its charge to promote on-the-job and off-the-job safety.
Miles from Tucson, Arizona, in the northeast corner of the White Mountains, approximately 350 employees work to generate electricity for three different electric companies’ four generating units. Tucson Electric Power’s generation station (TEPSGS), in Springerville, Arizona, has recently become the third company within Unisource Energy Corporation to opt for a behavior-based safety (BBS) process. They completed the design phase this August.
